Photo: Monty NelsonReverend Richard Montgomery (Monty) Nelson has moved to Commerce twice. There were fifty years between those moves. His father, Reverend Raymond Nelson, served the Commerce Presbyterian Church from 1958 to 1963. The Nelsons now return to Commerce from eight years of service in Aurora, Nebraska. The last time, they moved north from Tampa, FL. The Manse on Clayton Street was built at that time to accommodate the seven Nelsons.

Reverend Nelson graduated from Presbyterian College and Columbia Seminary (1976-1978). Monty met Penny Hicks while his parents served their last Church in Swainsboro, Georgia.

Ken PowersKen has served this congregation since 1997. In similar capacities, and for more than 30 years, he has affiliated with churches in Georgia, North Carolina, and Kentucky. His duties include the overall music supervision of the church, with ongoing responsibilities with the church choir, 3-octave handbell ensemble, and worship committee. 

Powers is a public school music teacher, a member of the Georgia Music Educators Association, and holds two degrees in Music (B.MUS. University of Georgia; MCM, Southern Seminary) and two degrees in educational leadership (Ed. S., University of Alabama; PhD., Walden University).  Ken has participated in the Northeast Georgia Presbytery's Mexico Mission Project.

Penny grew up in Swainsboro, Georgia and received her BSED and MED in Elementary Education from Georgia Southern University and her ESL degree from University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She has taught first through 11th grade students in Georgia and Nebraska, as well as an elementary class at the British School in Kinshasa, Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo.)

Penny began taking piano lessons when she was in first grade, continuing both piano and organ training throughout high school and into college. she began playing for her hometown church when she was in 8th grade. Penny enjoys all aspects of church music, especially organ and hand bells.

Patsy Benson began studying classical piano at five years of age.  After high school, she studied in Sweden under a foreign exchange scholarship and returned to further her musical training at the University of South Alabama where she had earned a piano scholarship. 

Patsy launched her professional career by touring throughout the southern states and into the U.S. Virgin Islands.  She took a hiatus from touring in order to raise two daughters and graduate from University of Alabama in Birmingham with a BS in Computer Science. She continued to perform locally as a professional actress and singer, as well as accompanist for church services, weddings, and in theatrical venues.

Brad Bishoff, Treasurer PDF Print E-mail
Brad BishoffBradley D. Bishoff has been the treasurer of Commerce Presbyterian Church since January 2000.  He received his accounting degree from West Virginia University. Brad is married to Jackie Bishoff, and they have two sons, Ross and William.  He is the owner of Cartridge World of Winder as well as Cartridge World of Monroe.
